Chef Malika King

Chef de Cuisine

Chef Malika King

Pronouns: They/Them

Known simply as Chef King, Malika King is a Brooklyn-born chef, culinary leader, and passionate advocate for food as a vehicle for culture, community, and creativity. Now based in Washington, DC, Chef King serves as Chef de Cuisine for Croix and RowHouse, where they have played an integral role in shaping the vision and development of Croix's menu while elevating the presentation and flavor profile of RowHouse's beloved Low Country-inspired cuisine.

A first-generation culinary leader in their family, Chef King's journey began at just seven years old, when they baked their very first dish—a Fruity Pebbles cake. That early love of cooking evolved into a lifelong passion, leading them to successfully petition for a culinary arts program at their high school and later win a Teen Iron Chef competition alongside their classmates.

At 37, Chef King brings more than a decade of professional culinary experience spanning restaurants, hotels, and high-volume kitchens. A graduate of both the JNA Institute of Culinary Art and SUNY Cobleskill, they have built a career grounded in technical skill, menu development, mentorship, and operational excellence. Their culinary perspective is deeply influenced by their Jamaican and Trinidadian heritage, creating a unique lens through which they approach flavor, hospitality, and storytelling through food.

As Chef de Cuisine, Chef King is committed to creating memorable dining experiences that honor tradition while embracing innovation. Their long-term goal is restaurant ownership and creating spaces where diverse communities can gather, connect, and celebrate culture through food.

Outside the kitchen, Chef King is an avid gardener whose backyard is filled with homegrown herbs, tomatoes, and potatoes. They are also a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community and enjoy riding motorcycles whenever they can find time away from the stove.
